If employees truly are a company’s best asset, then leaders and managers should make caring for them a priority.
-Robyn Reilly, Gallup’s 5 ways to Improve Employee Engagement
According to a global study by Gallup, only 13% of the global workforce is engaged at work. The whole report is worth a read, but our biggest takeaway was that organisations are playing an active role in employee disengagement–and they can do something about it.
Companies that create environments where their employees can be their best selves each day can see productivity gains of up to 17% (up to 22% according to HBR). What would an extra 17% mean for your organisation?
It isn’t just about productivity, though it’s the motivating factor for many companies. Engagement also brings high retention, low turnover, creativity, relationships, work-life balance and higher quality of life (in and out of the office).
What does an engaged employee look like? Executive coach John Baldoni writes, “They want to come to work, understand their jobs, and know how their work contributes to the success of the organisation.”
Beyond that, according to expert Jim Harter, a Gallup scientist who has written more than 1,000 articles on the subject, “They look out for the needs of their coworkers and the overall enterprise, because they personally ‘own’ the result of their work and that of the organization.”
We’re not suggesting that carpooling helps employees better understand their jobs or gives them greater ownership in their work. We are saying something a little simpler but equally important: that creating and encouraging carpooling is a way to care for your employees, to facilitate their concern for one another, and to foster greater engagement by fostering greater purpose.
Harter says that’s the key to engagement. Show employees how they, individually, contribute to the organisation’s purpose overall and they’ll do a better job fulfilling their role.
Because part of your organisation’s work is to hit sustainability targets and your employees are integral to that success, empowering them to take an active role can boost their engagement.
And because the solution diminishes the commuting burden, facilitates work-life balance, and promotes their physical and mental well-being, it enables them to be their best selves at work.
